Golfers who spend a lot of time in the sun know three things. First, it is important to sun protect your skin. Second, sunscreen and a golf cap are not enough. And third, wide-brimmed golf hats and golf sleeves provide valuable sun protection not to mention cooling and comfort.<\/p>\n

Importance of Sun Protection<\/h3>\n

The importance of sun protection cannot be overstated. Golfers inherently are in the sun. Without proper protection, a golfer can get a sunburn in as little as 15 minutes. Chronic exposure to the sun causes skin damage and can lead to skin cancer. Just ask Adam Scott who had skin cancer removed from his nose or Rory Sabbatini who had squamous cell carcinoma removed from his face or golfing greats Fred Couples, Jimmy Walker, and Brian Davis who have had experiences with skin cancer along with many others too numerous to count.<\/p>\n

Did you know that skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Did you know that skin cancer is life threatening? The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that one out of every five Americans will develop skin cancer and The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 10,000 people will die from skin cancer each year.\u00a0 Sun protection is important and should be a priority for all golfers.<\/p>\n

Sunscreen and a golf cap are not enough<\/h3>\n

Let’s start with sunscreen. Did you know that sunscreen doesn’t last very long? If you apply sunscreen very liberally and slop it on real good, you will only get about 2 hours of sun protection. In fact, some brands only offer 1 hour of sun protection. And if you apply sunscreen sparingly or wipe it off when you wipe off your sweat, you may only get 15 minutes of sun protection. As most rounds of golf last 4 to 5 hours or more, a single application of sunscreen is not enough.<\/p>\n

Now let’s talk about those golf caps. They provide minimal protection from the sun for your nose, eyes and face and no protection from the sun for your ears and neck. For a golfer, there is no better way to be overconfident of your sun protection and at risk of developing skin cancer than to put on a cap, rub\u00a0 on a little sunscreen, and to then spend an afternoon playing golf in the sun.<\/p>\n

Wide-brimmed Golf Hats and Golf Sleeves<\/h3>\n

First, let’s talk about golf hats. There is no better sun protection strategy for golfers than wearing wide-brimmed golf hats and golf sleeves. Wide-brimmed golf hats are far more effective than caps and visors at keeping the harmful rays of the sun off your skin. A wide-brimmed golf hat such as a standard bucket hat or a bucket hat with neck flap will protect your face, nose, ears, and neck from the sun. And, you can still apply sunscreen for additional protection for areas of your face and neck that are likely to get exposure to direct as well as indirect sunlight.<\/p>\n

Now on to golf sleeves. Increasingly worn by golfers of all ages and abilities, golf sleeves provide sun protection as well as comfort and cooling. UV golf sleeves typically provide UPF 50+ protection from the sun. Golf sleeves not only sun protect your arms, but they also keep your arms cool and dry. This means greater comfort on hot days not to mention protection from annoying mosquitoes and bugs that bite. Just about every player on the LPGA wears golf sleeves for sun protection and increasingly players on the PGA can be seen wearing them. Important to note, golf sleeves are not only for the arms.
