Did you know that 72 million Americans have thin skin? Are you one of them? As we get older, our skin thins on account of natural aging, sun exposure, genetics, and use of medications such as corticosteroids. If you think that you might have thin skin, here is what you should know and do.

What you should know about thin skin<\/h3>\n

First, you should know that thin skin is not necessarily a serious or life threatening medical condition. For most people, our skin thins as we age. This is on account of the loss of the fatty layer of our skin that normally protects our blood vessels. Our skin loses its moisture and elasticity and becomes thin and sometimes saggy. Technically, the skin’s cell division process sharply reduces with age and there is almost no cell rejuvenation. As a result, our skin becomes thinner and thinner and more susceptible to cuts and tears.<\/p>\n

Second, you should know that exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun causes thin skinning. We now know, the sun is not our friend. Sure, we can’t live without the sun and the sun contributes to our well-being and good mood, but there are many harmful effects of the sun including premature aging of the skin, thinning of the skin, sunburn, brown spots, heatstroke, eye disease, and skin cancer.<\/p>\n

And third, you should know that you should see your dermatologist on an annual basis to have a full body exam. You should not view a trip to the dermatologist as a cosmetic visit. It is a health visit. While many of our skin concerns start with how we look when we have a particular condition or outbreak that is visible to others, there is far more to skin care – acne, psoriasis, hives, hair loss, as well as procedures to remove scars, warts, and skin growths. Healthy skin is essential for overall health.<\/p>\n

What you should do about thin skin<\/h3>\n

If you have thin skin or feel that your skin might be thinning, there are some actions that you can take. First, while you can’t change your genetics and might not be able to change your medications, take the time to find out about your family medical history and always be sure to know the side effects of any medications that you are taking. Based upon this information, your doctor can make recommendations and provide you with alternatives that best fit your medical profile and needs.<\/p>\n

Second, cover your skin by wearing pants, sleeves, and wide-brimmed hats.
